42개의 빵 그림책 < BAKED SHAPES > 

This is a book of paintings depicting 42 types of bread that I have worked on since 2015. I first became interested in shapes of bread as I was studying about drawing commonplace objects with other artist friends. I found each type of bread has their own unique and interesting shape, which is fragile and easily crushed and crumbled. I have captured those moments in bread's life. It also was a great excuse for eating lots of bread without feeling guilty at the end. I have been wanting to make a book with these works someday.  You might imagine the mountain shapes from one piece of timeworn shell or think about ice cream colors you like while you are watching irregular shapes of clouds in the sky. At times, existing images can be seen as entirely different images because of their shapes, colors and textures. Different people see the painting in different ways with their own experiences and preferences. In my case, however, the moment I realize the commonalities between two different objects, it also becomes clear to me what the unique characters of each of the objects are. Eom said she often finds shapes and textures of a sandy desert while seeing bread. Her impasto brushwork makes us imagine all the formation process of the bread without any specific explanation such as puffing out, being baked etc. It gives us similar experience of feeling `embodied time` from geographical features created by repeating erosion and deposition. Bread, desert and mountains exists equivalently in Eom's painting as investigated objects. Exploration of natural geographical features and capturing them on a canvas require a large amount of effort and opportunity cost. But bread can be a space you can explore all these variety of nature shapes in the small atelier. Yun Jae Won

이 책은 2015년-2018년 사이 틈틈이 그려온 42개의 빵 그림을 모은 화집이다. 3년 전부터 동료들과 함께 주변의 대상을 그려보는 스터디를 해왔다. 

그중에서도 나는 빵의 형태에 매력을 느꼈다. 저마다의 기하학적인 형태가 갖춰져 있다가도 쉽게 뭉개지고 허물어지는 과정을 그려보고 싶었다 - 2018년 엄유정 

 마모된 조개의 조각에서 산의 모양을 발견하거나, 시간에 따라 변화하는 하늘의 색을 보다가 좋아하는 아이스크림의 색을 생각하는 것처럼 어떤 사물이나 풍경에서 모양이나 질감, 색상으로 인해 원래의 사물에서 다른 무언가를 떠올리게 될 때가 있다. 직관적으로 유사함을 느끼는 사물ㆍ풍경에 관한 정보는 개개인의 시각, 촉각의 경험에 기인하기에 저마다 다르겠지만, 나의 경우 서로 다른 두 존재의 비슷함을 인지하는 과정에서 각각의 고유한 특성이 무엇인지가 더 명확해지고는 한다. 엄유정은 빵을 보다가 가끔 사막의 형태와 질감을 떠올렸다고 했다. 작가가 그린 빵의 표현에 쌓인 물감, 붓이 지나간 자리는 설명이 없이도 부풀고 구워지는 빵의 형성과정을 추측하게 한다. 이는 보는 이에게 마모와 퇴적을 반복하는 지형에서 물질화된 시간을 느끼는 것과 비슷한 경험을 준다. 각기 다른 빵집의 진열대에서 선발되었을 42개의 빵이 그려진 그림들은 빵(breads)이라는 제목 대신 구워진 모양(baked shapes)이라는 제목으로 엮어졌다. 이 책에는 한정된 공간 안에서 되도록 애정이 가는 형상을 찾아가는 작가의 여정이 빵-구워진 모양에 대한 탐구의 과정으로 담겨있다. 엄유정의 그림에서 빵, 사막, 산은 형태와 색상을 탐구하는 대상으로서 동등하게 존재한다. 거대한 자연을 직접 경험하고 그리는 것은 많은 기회비용을 요하지만, 빵은 작은 작업실에서도 여러 모양을 탐험할 수 있는 장소가 된다. 그리고 그 장소는 작가의 손으로 재배치와 구성이 가능한 유동적인 대상이 된다. _ 글 윤재원
